Sverre Martin Brynjelsen contacted us as a newly qualified officer in 2019. During his very first assignment, he was offered a permanent position as Chief Officer. Since then, he has had an impressive career development – both professionally and personally.
Earlier this year, we received a very appreciated email from Sverre Martin, whom we have been in contact with since his first assignment with us in 2019. In the message, he thanked us for the role we have played in his career – a role that even contributed to him meeting his partner, with whom he now has a daughter.
Feedback like this motivates us to go the extra mile in our work. We are grateful to play a positive role in the lives of the seafarers we work with.
Here is his story.
A Maritime Upbringing
Sverre Martin grew up on Røvær, a group of islands located about 10 kilometers off the coast of Haugesund. He completed his nautical studies at the Western Norway University of Applied Sciences in 2017, but a maritime career was not always the plan.
“The plan was actually to join the police,” he says.
Nevertheless, he is glad that he, like many others from Røvær, ended up at sea. Growing up in a community where many pursue careers in fishing, maritime industries, and offshore operations likely played a significant role in shaping that path.
2019: Newly Graduated and First Assignment with OffshoreCrew
Shortly after completing his cadetship with Østensjø Rederi in the summer of 2019, Sverre Martin got in touch with OffshoreCrew. The first position he applied for was filled internally, but it did not take long before another opportunity arose.
“Not long after, OffshoreCrew called and asked if I would consider a one-week assignment as Chief Officer on a tugboat in Boa, operating on a contract for the Norwegian Coastal Administration.”
Although initially hesitant due to his limited experience as an officer, he chose to step outside his comfort zone and accept the challenge.
Permanent Position After the First Assignment
That decision proved to be a turning point.
“One week turned into two, as they wanted to keep me longer. When it was time to go home, I was offered a permanent position as Chief Officer with Boa. I stayed there for over three years on various tugboats before returning to Østensjø Rederi.”
The Job Led Him to Måløy – and to Love
His maritime career has also had a significant impact on his personal life.
“The best part of my career must be that I met my partner, Ingrid, in Måløy in the autumn of 2019 while I was working in Boa. I have lived in Måløy since 2020, and we now have a daughter who is 2.5 years old.”
He also highlights strong collegial relationships and experiences from international assignments as some of the key highlights of his career.
Master’s Degree and New Opportunity Through OffshoreCrew
In recent years, Sverre Martin has been working on board Edda Fortis, with assignments including Libya, where he has been stationed since 2023/2024.
“We picked her up in South Korea and carried out our first assignment in Malaysia. I am also currently completing a master’s degree in Maritime Management at the University of South-Eastern Norway.”
He is now preparing for his next step:
“I will soon be starting with Floatel International, a position that came about through OffshoreCrew.”
This story illustrates how one opportunity can open the door to many others – and how strong collaboration between seafarers and recruitment partners can contribute to both professional growth and personal milestones.
