Young at Sea

Learn why engineers Remi and Vegard are certain they chose the right career.

During a recent visit onboard Skandi Africa, OffshoreCrew AS had the pleasure of meeting two young Norwegian marine engineers who are both confident they made the right choice by pursuing a career at sea.

Remi Ekerhovd (pictured on the left) and Vegard Langeland (pictured on the right) work onboard Skandi Africa and share a clear enthusiasm for their profession, the vessel, and the opportunities that offshore life provides.

When asked if they have any advice for others considering a career at sea, both are clear:

“Go for it. We would definitely recommend it.”

Both Remi and Vegard emphasize the international working environment, varied days, and strong professional development as key reasons they would recommend a maritime career to others.

Remi is originally from Bergen, where he also completed his education. He began with Technology and Industrial Subjects at upper secondary level (Teknologi- og industrifag, VGS), followed by an apprenticeship. After completing his trade certificate, he continued with Maritime Subjects at Technical College (Maritime Fag, Fagskole).

Since graduating in 2019, Remi has built broad international experience and is now sailing as First Engineer.

Over the years, he has worked in regions such as Indonesia, Brazil, Shetland, Cape Verde, Mauritius, and Ghana. He describes the job as varied and rewarding, combining demanding technical work with the opportunity to experience different parts of the world.

Vegard has followed a similar educational path, starting with Technology and Industrial Subjects at upper secondary level (Teknologi- og industrifag), completing his apprenticeship, and continuing with Maritime Subjects at Technical College (maritime fag ved fagskole). Unlike Remi, Vegard completed his education in his hometown of Ålesund.

He is currently sailing as a cadet, and OffshoreCrew met him during his second trip onboard Skandi Africa.

Learning at Sea – and Exploring Ashore

Vegard highlights the learning environment onboard as one of the main reasons he enjoys the job. Compared to previous vessels, Skandi Africa offers more advanced equipment and systems, making every day work both challenging and educational.

“Brazil is one of my favorite places to dock. We often get a full day alongside, which gives us time to explore the area. I really enjoy going on mountain hikes when we are there,” Vegard says.

The Value of Being Present Onboard

At OffshoreCrew AS, one of the most rewarding aspects of our work is the opportunity to visit vessels and meet crews in their actual working environment. Coming onboard our customers’ and partners’ vessels allows us to gain valuable insight into daily operations and working conditions, while also receiving direct feedback from the crew.

Conversations like the one with Remi and Vegard provide important input that helps us improve our services—and remind us why supporting motivated seafarers throughout their careers remains at the core of what we do.
