FAQ: Questions from the Next Generation of Seafarers 

Meeting future seafarers is an important part of what we do. At career days and industry events, we often receive many of the same questions. Below, we have gathered and answered some of the most common questions we received from students at Fagskolen i Agder at our stand at their recent Career Day. 

What does OffshoreCrew do? 

OffshoreCrew AS provides intelligent recruitment and crew management services to the offshore and maritime sector. We have been operating since 2013 and are headquartered in Kristiansand, Norway. 

We supply qualified personnel to projects and vessels within: 

• Maritime and cruise 
• Offshore Oil & Gas 
• Offshore Wind 
• Aquaculture 

Our role is to connect skilled seafarers with reputable operators and shipowners, while ensuring quality, compliance, and long-term cooperation on both sides. 

What kind of positions do you offer, and what types of vessels do you work with? 

We often say: “If it floats, we crew it.” 
In practice, this means we work with a wide range of vessels, both large and small, across multiple segments of the maritime and offshore industries. 

Typical vessel types include AHTS, construction vessels, PSVs, jack-ups, and rigs, among others. 

We recruit for a broad spectrum of positions, such as: 

• Captain, Chief Officer, 1st and 2nd Officer 
• Chief Engineer, 1st and 2nd Engineer, Mechanics 
• ETO / ETR 
• DPOs, Crane Operators, Riggers, Storekeepers 
• ABs, Motormen 
• ROV Pilots 
• Catering positions such as Stewards and Cooks 
• And many more

Where do you have assignments? 

Our operations are global. While our office staff is based in Kristiansand, Norway, our seafarers work internationally. 

We have a strong presence in the North Sea and along the Norwegian coast. In addition, during 2025 OffshoreCrew supported projects in South America, the Caribbean, North America, West Africa, and parts of Asia. 

Do you only offer temporary positions? 

No. We facilitate both temporary assignments and permanent positions. The type of employment depends on the vessel, the project, and the needs of the shipowner. 

Will I be employed by OffshoreCrew or by the shipowner? 

Both options are possible. 
In some cases, we recruit candidates directly to permanent positions with shipowners. In other cases, we employ seafarers ourselves and lease them out in fixed rotations. 

Regardless of the employment model, we invest time in getting to know both the candidate and the client. Close follow-up and long-term cooperation are important parts of how we work. 

Are you looking for engineers or electricians? 

Yes — very much so. 
Marine engineers and electricians are currently among the most in-demand roles, together with crane operators. Qualified candidates in these fields are highly sought after. 

Do you offer cadet positions? 

We do not have our own cadet program. However, we receive requests from shipowners who are looking for cadets, and in those cases we assist with finding suitable candidates. 

We may also proactively suggest strong cadet candidates we know well, when we believe there is a good match with a client. 

What kind of rotation do you offer? 

Rotations depend on the assignment and vessel. Common rotations include 2–4 and 4–4. For international projects, 6–6 rotations are also frequently used. 

Are there opportunities for career development? 

Absolutely. As long as you are qualified, temporary assignments and shorter contracts can be an excellent way to gain experience on new vessel types, explore different roles, and build both competence and professional networks. 

Many seafarers use this flexibility strategically as part of their long-term career development. 

What should I focus on when applying for work through OffshoreCrew? 

The most important thing for us is to get a clear understanding of who you are as a person and what competence you bring. 

It is a strong advantage if your application clearly shows: 

• Your qualifications and certificates 
• Your motivation for applying 
• Your availability 

This helps us assess where you may be a good match and how we can best support you. 

Is it possible to get your first job through OffshoreCrew? 

Yes, it is possible. Ultimately, shipowners decide which candidates they move forward with, but we do our best to ensure that strong candidates also get opportunities early in their careers. 

Can I work through OffshoreCrew during school holidays? 

Yes. We maintain separate substitute lists for summer and Christmas periods. As long as you are qualified, it is possible to work during school holidays and gain valuable experience at sea. 

Can I register my CV on our site with limited experience?

Yes, you can. Just write N/A in the required fields for experience if you cannot list any. Remember to update your profile as you gain experience.
